Koch Snowflake Ornament

by DOCK

This snowflake fractal design was discovered by Helge von Koch in 1904. A fractal is a design whereby a part of the design has the same characteristics as the whole.

This snowflake fractal design is also known as a recursive design because it repeats itself.

Looking at the bottom row of the stage area, 1). take a straight line and divide it into three equal parts. 2). Replace the center part with two sides of an equilateral triangle. 3). Repeat the division of the parts. Notice that there are four repeats of design # 2. 4). Repeat design #3, turn it 60 degrees and then 120 degrees to complete a circumnavigation. 5). Repeat the division of design #4 by 1/3 and turn it in the same manner as before. Notice that the size remains the same but the design gets denser.

This Koch Snowflake ornament shows four iterations of the Koch fractal. Starting in the center is Level 1 with each subsequent snowflake going outwards is another level going to Level 4. The ornament is framed with a satin stitch and a circle for a hanger.
