I programmed this pattern in TurtleStitch in March 2022. Its based on Clive Richards work: 100 cubes, which he created in 1973 using a line plotter. https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1327456/100-cubes-plotter-drawing-richards-clive/
Clive Richards researched and developed computer art at Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University). In 1973 he created several works using a line plotter, including 361 cubes: https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1327453/361-cubes-plotter-drawing-richards-clive/ The originals are in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection.
After a conversation with Clive in 2021, I began exploring the similarities between line plotters and embroidery machines and re-created Clive’s 100 cubes in TurtleStitch. I stitched the work in black and white to celebrate the 2 tone music movement that came out of Coventry in the 1970s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-tone_(music_genre)
